4 Things To Expect From A Newborn Photo Session | Macomb Newborn Photographer

So you’re pregnant, likely in your second or third trimester and you’re ready to book a newborn session for once your baby is born (something you will always be happy you did!). You’re looking for a baby photographer, asking some friends for recommendations, doing a google search, but you aren’t really quite sure what to even expect, when the photos of your infant are supposed to be done, or what you can expect to spend.

Lets go through it together. Ready?

First I want to say congratulations on the addition of your family! There’s quite possibly nothing more exciting, am I right?! There’s so much newness, anticipation, and joy ahead, so let’s dive into what you can expect from a newborn baby photo shoot.

01. Photos you LOVE

For your newborn photos, I want them to be custom for you and the look that you like, that’s why I invite my clients to the studio for a consultation when inquiring to book a session. We go through what the full service photography experience with me is like, we talk about your color preferences for the session, your likes and dislikes, and we go through examples. By doing this, you get exactly what you love and are looking for from your photos. It is also a good time to, quite frankly, meet the photographer that will be working with your new little babe (that’s me, of course!). It gives parents a comfort, and I get that.

02. A relaxing session for you, while a safe and cozy session for baby

Baby’s safety is always number one in professional newborn photography. Just knowing that fact, you can let out a big sigh of relief knowing that your baby is being handled and posed carefully and safely while getting those gorgeous and squishable poses! During this time, you get to relax in my cozy seating area for parents, where you can watch me work with baby the entire time. Let me remind you, this is typically 2ish weeks after baby is born, so you are at prime sleep deprivation levels and you would do anything to just take it easy. One of my dear friends describes the experience like going to the salon or spa and knowing the environment is chill and quite frankly, pampering. My goal is to give you that same experience at the newborn session - you new parents deserve it!

03. Chat with a fellow mama

Post birth hormones and sleep deprivation catches up with all of us, trust me. Add in a complete shift to life, and you may want someone to talk to, or the very least to use as a sounding board to talk about how magical and crazy motherhood is. I love chatting with my clients while I work, and I’m a pretty open book about my experience with my babies and parenthood to date. Often times my clients will ask me “is this normal?” questions and while I’m no doctor, I talk with a lot of mamas and have had plenty of experiences myself. It’s just NICE to talk to someone who gets it, ya know?

04. More than just digital files on a USB

Yep, I said it, more than just digitals. In this age of social media-everything, phone camera rolls with 5,000 pictures on it, not having photos to see and hold, I firmly believe in working with you to get you portraits, wall art, heirloom albums and more for your home and keepsake. I’ve heard more times than I can count from new parents that they still haven’t done anything with their wedding photos and it’s too overwhelming to go through the hundreds that they were given. I get it. Fact: going through and narrowing down the best of the best photos in our photography world is called culling, and I believe that should be done for you. After photos have been culled, it’s much easier to decide what you would like to do with the photos. This entire process with me is done at a client’s Viewing and Ordering appointment, so I can walk you through everything and what the best options are for you and your home. It’s a satisfying and fun experience for clients because they actually do something with the photos rather than have them sit on their USBs.

Your newborn portrait experience should be relaxing and memorable for you, providing you gorgeous photos to look back on fondly. Definitely take the time during the newborn phase to get those precious photos taken. And a tip for you: most newborn photographers book 2-3 months in advance, so start looking to book in your second trimester.

Kindly,
