“Family Photos aren’t for the ‘now’ You. They’re for the You in 20, 30, 40 years time. Think about that.”

- Kylie Mills

We know the importance of family photos. We know how fleeting time is and how quickly our kids grow up. We know we NEED to do the family photos, but we also know it can be overwhelming. The number one stress I hear from clients is “I have no idea what to dress everyone in to look good!” I’ll be honest, outfits can make or break the entire look of your photos (no pressure, right?!). How about we cover the main tips I discuss with my clients AND give you examples because some of us are visual folks, mmmkay? I created these visuals and have included affiliated links to ease your shopping woes, too.

Let’s start!

  1. Coordinate, but don't match:

When planning outfits for your family, aim for a coordinated look rather than matching outfits. Choose a color palette or a theme that complements each family member's individual style. This will create visual harmony while allowing everyone to express their unique personalities.

2. Consider the location and season:

Take into account the location and season when selecting outfits. For outdoor shoots, earthy tones, pastels, or vibrant colors can work well. In colder months, layering with scarves, sweaters, or jackets adds depth and texture to the overall look. In warmer months, lightweight fabrics and breezy dresses can create a fresh and relaxed vibe.

3. Avoid busy patterns and large logos:

Busy patterns and large logos can be distracting and take the focus away from your family's faces. Opt for solid colors or subtle patterns that won't overpower the images. This allows the focus to remain on the connection and emotions between family members.

4. Dress for timeless appeal:

Choose outfits that will stand the test of time. Classic and timeless styles tend to age well in photographs, ensuring your images remain beautiful and relevant for years to come. Avoid trends that may quickly become outdated, as they can make your photos look dated in the future.

5. Pay attention to clothing fit:

Properly fitted clothes can make a significant difference in how everyone looks in the photos. Avoid outfits that are too loose or too tight, as they can affect body proportions and make individuals feel uncomfortable. Ensure that each family member's clothes are well-fitted and flattering.

6. Add visual interest with accessories:

Accessories can add a touch of personality and visual interest to your family outfits. Consider incorporating accessories like scarves, hats, belts, statement jewelry, or colorful shoes. However, be mindful not to go overboard. Choose a few key accessories that complement the overall look without overwhelming the composition.

7. Harmonize without being identical:

While you want your family's outfits to coordinate, it's essential to maintain individuality. Varying necklines, textures, and styles can add depth and visual appeal to the overall composition. By striking a balance between unity and individuality, you can create a visually stunning and harmonious ensemble.

8. Dress comfortably and authentically:

Above all, ensure that everyone feels comfortable and authentic in their chosen outfits. When family members are at ease, their genuine smiles and expressions shine through, resulting in more natural and heartfelt photographs. Consider the location, weather conditions, and each individual's preferences to ensure everyone feels their best.

After going through the tips and seeing some examples, doesn’t that help you feel so much more prepared for outfit shopping for everyone? There’s one more incredibly important tip that I always tell my clients - Mama, pick your outfit first. We are always the most critical of ourselves and how we look in photos, so pick your outfit or dress and then plan the rest of the family around yours. Remember, the most important thing is for everyone to feel comfortable, relaxed, and genuinely themselves during the photo shoot. With these tips in mind, you're well on your way to creating stunning family portraits that will be cherished for a lifetime.

I’d love to hear, which outfit set catches your eye the most?
