Newborn Photos with Siblings | Tips from a Detroit Newborn Photographer
Bringing a new baby into your family is such a beautiful transition, and certainly one you want documented with professional newborn photos (says every mom ever). If you already have a toddler or young child at home, you might be wondering how they’ll do for those coveted, gorgeous sibling photos that melts every parents’ hearts, am I right? You might be wondering:
“Will my toddler cooperate for sibling photos with the new baby?”
As a Detroit newborn photographer, I can tell you, you are not alone in that worry.
And the good news?
Sibling photos don’t need perfection to be meaningful. In fact, some of the most loved images come from real, in-between moments.
Here’s how to prepare, what to expect, and how to make the experience feel easy for everyone.
Why Sibling Photos Matter More Than You Think
These aren’t just “extra” images. They’re the beginning of your children’s relationship.
The way your toddler looks at the baby.
The tiny hand holding theirs.
The curiosity, the pride, even the uncertainty.
These moments become part of your family’s story. And they really will make you swoon.
How to Prepare Your Child Before the Session
Preparation doesn’t need to be complicated, but it does make a difference.
Talk About It Ahead of Time
Let your child know what to expect in a simple, positive way.
Try:
“We’re going to take pictures with the baby”
“You get to help me today”
Keep it light and exciting, as well as about them and not just about the new baby.
Set Realistic Expectations
Toddlers especially are unpredictable and that’s okay.
You don’t need:
Perfect smiles
Long attention spans
Constant cooperation
You just need a few small moments, and a photographer who knows how to capture them.
Plan Around Their Schedule
Whenever possible:
Choose a time they’re well-rested
Avoid nap time conflicts
Bring snacks - and help yourself to my snack area at the studio (that’s what it’s there for!)
Happy kids = smoother sessions.
What to Wear for Newborn Photos with Siblings
Outfit coordination makes a huge difference in how your images feel.
Keep It Simple and Timeless
For siblings, I recommend:
• Neutral tones (cream, beige, soft gray, muted pastels)
• Minimal patterns
• Soft textures
This keeps the focus on connection and not clothing. It also will give your photos a timeless feel.
Avoid These Common Mistakes
• Bright colors or neon tones
• Large logos or graphics
• Matching too perfectly
Instead of “matching,” aim for coordinating.
Sibling Outfit Ideas
• Soft knit sweater + neutral pants
• Simple dress with texture
• Barefoot or simple socks
These photograph beautifully in-studio. You’re also welcome to use (complimentary) any clothing pieces from my Client Closet for babies and toddlers. This is a huge help to parents, and we can easily color coordinate with those pieces.
“Bribery”… But Make It Thoughtful
Let’s be honest, sometimes a little motivation helps. And that’s okay. My secret bribery that isn’t super messy, doesn’t make their tongues turn blue, AND doesn’t take a long time to eat… the mini marshmellow! I typically have some at the studio on hand when we need them. Here’s a few other tips, too.
What Actually Works
Small treats after their turn
A favorite snack
A simple reward like choosing a movie later
The key is:
Reward after, not during. If it’s given too soon, they’ll call it quits right after the reward.
What to Avoid
Overpromising
Bringing out rewards too early
Turning it into pressure
We want it to feel like a fun experience, not a performance.
What the Session Actually Looks Like
This might surprise you:
Sibling photos (and family photos) are usually done first, before the posed newborn photos.
Why?
Because:
• Kids have the most patience at the beginning
• We can capture those moments quickly
• Then they’re free to relax
After sibling images are done, your child can:
• Take a break
• Have a snack
• Even leave with another parent if needed
Examples of Sibling Newborn Photos
These moments don’t need to be perfectly posed.
Some of the most meaningful images include:
A gentle kiss on baby’s head
Holding baby’s hand
Sitting close together
Looking at baby with curiosity
Connection matters more than perfection.
A Gentle Reassurance for Moms
If your toddler doesn’t want to sit still…
If they’re feeling shy…
If they need breaks…
That’s okay.
Your child doesn’t need to perform. They just need to be themselves.
And years from now, you won’t remember whether they smiled perfectly.
You’ll remember how little they were.
How they fit next to your baby.
How your family felt in that season.
