5 Reasons Not to Skip Newborn Photos | Detroit Newborn Photographer
Bringing home a new baby changes everything in the most beautiful, overwhelming way. The days blur together between feedings, snuggles, and trying to get a little sleep wherever you can find it.
And somewhere in the middle of that whirlwind, many moms think:
"Maybe we’ll skip newborn photos this time."
Maybe it’s your third or fourth baby.
Maybe you feel exhausted.
Maybe it feels like one more thing to plan.
But before you decide to pass on newborn photos, here are a few reasons many moms later say they’re so glad they didn’t skip this tiny chapter.
As a Detroit newborn photographer, I’ve watched so many families come back years later saying these images became some of the most meaningful ones they own. And can I just say, that makes my heart so happy to hear! I’ve also spoken with moms who have skipped the newborn photos and tell me they really regret it now. Let’s avoid the regret, yes?
Here are five reasons that might surprise you.
You Deserve to Be in the Frame Too
So many moms have thousands of photos of their baby, but very few photos with them. I’ll also add, very few photos with their baby where they like how they look, too (no offense husbands, we know you tried your best!).
Newborn photography is one of the rare times when you get to step into the frame and be documented as part of the story. You may not be perfectly rested. You may not be perfectly put together (although I can help with that!). You will be present, holding your baby and appreciating this little life you grew.
And years later, those images become some of the most cherished ones.
2. Photos Help You See the Beauty in the Chaos
When you're living in the middle of sleepless nights, figuring out breastfeeding and endless burp cloth laundry, it can be hard to pause and see just how beautiful this stage really is.
Professional newborn portraits allow you to step back and see your family the way others do. I promise, these will be some of your favorite photos. Ever.
3. The Early Days Are Hard to Remember Clearly
New motherhood can feel like a fog of beautiful exhaustion. Many moms later say those first weeks passed in a blur. You’ve given birth, your body is recovering and healing while you’re figuring out the new changes. It’s natural to be exhausted and forget this phase so easily, especially with a lack of sleep.
Newborn photos become a way to revisit that season, to remember how small your baby was and all of their teeny, tiny newborn details.
4. Your Older Children Will Treasure These Photos Someday
One day your baby will grow up and look at these images. You’ll flip through their newborn heirloom photo album together ooo’ing and ahhh’ing and how tiny and cute they were. And they won’t just see themselves as a newborn; they’ll see those first family photos and what their mom and dad looked like as new parents. They’ll see the way you held them. The way their tiny hand fit inside yours. The way your whole world clearly revolved around them.
These photos become part of their story.
5. These Photos Become Heirlooms
Newborn portraits often become the images that hang in hallways for years.
They’re the photographs grandparents proudly display. The ones that get passed down. The ones your children show their own kids someday.
These are the portraits that are keepsakes for decades.
Did any of these surprise you? Maybe some things you hadn’t thought about? That’s ok, that’s what I’m here for. I always like to mention, it’s best to contact your newborn photographer in your second or third trimester, as photographers who specialize in newborn posing and portraits tend to book up 2-3 months in advance.
