What to Wear for Fall Family Pictures: Easy Outfit Ideas for the Whole Family
Ahhhh, Fall in Michigan. Is it your favorite, too? The warm colors, cozy textures, changing leaves, pumpkin everything, and beautiful golden light. It makes complete sense why the Fall is busy season for us photographers.
But if you’ve ever tried to coordinate fall family outfits for pictures, you know the hardest part isn’t necessarily finding something cute for yourself. It’s figuring out how to dress everyone so the outfits coordinate without looking like everyone is wearing the exact same thing.
And let’s be honest, getting everyone dressed and photo-ready is already enough of a project.
The good news? I’ve got SEVERAL family outfit combination examples ready and linked for you. Read on!
You don't need perfectly matching outfits to create beautiful family photos. You just need a thoughtful color palette, a mix of textures and layers, and outfits that feel like your family.
As a family photographer serving Metro Detroit families, I’ve seen firsthand how much clothing can affect the overall look and feel of your images. So I put together this guide and examples to help make choosing your fall family photo outfits a whole lot easier.
Whether you're planning photos in a field, an orchard, downtown, or in the comfort of your own home, these tips will help you put together outfits that photograph beautifully.
The Fall Family Outfit Inspiration You’re Here For!
I could talk about outfit planning for hours, but I know you’re short on time and you just need to see the visual AND be able to order it, stat! So let’s get started. Here are several family of four outfit combinations to get you going, along with some helpful outfit tips at the end.
Mom’s Dress | Dad’s Sweater | Girl’s Dress | Boy’s Sweater
I’m always a sucker for a good neutral family combination! It’s timeless and everything looks so cohesive together. Plus, by adding a couple of small prints it gives visual interest to the eye for an immediate YES!
Mom’s Dress + Cardigan | Dad’s Shirt | Boy’s Shirt | Girl’s Dress
The perfect balance of greens and neutrals, along with the flowy feel from mom and daughter’s dress makes this a winning combination. Notice the small striped detail on Dad’s shirt, and the lace texture on Mom’s dress to keep it interesting for the eye with varying textures and patterns.
Girl’s Dress | Mom’s Dress | Dad’s Sweater | Boy’s Sweater
Navy and burgundy are a winning color combination for Fall! Can I point out: you absolutely have to see what the back on Mom’s dress looks like because it is cuuute! Add a cardigan into the mix for a chilly day and you’re all set!
Boy’s Outfit | Mom’s Cardigan | Mom’s Dress | Dad’s Shirt | Girl’s Dress
I’m calling it now - olive green is going to be the color of Fall for photos! Also, mom’s dress in this is so feminine and you’ll still be cozy with that chocolate brown chunky cardigan to slip on if the temperature dips. This is a good look for the whole fam.
Dad’s Shirt | Dad’s Pants | Mom’s Sweater | Mom’s Skirt | Girl’s Dress | Girl’s Cardigan | Boy’s Shirt
This look is giving a slightly more elevated vibe with the Dad and Boy’s shirts, and I’m not mad about it. Add in the ruffle of the dress, as well as Mama’s cute sweater (slightly showing a little skin but not too much for family photos) and I’m sold on this look!
Girl’s Dress | Mom’s Dress | Dad’s Sweater | Girl’s Jumper | Girl’s Knee High Socks
I did this same color combinations with the hint of animal print for our own family photos about five years ago and it’s still one of my favorite outfits we’ve done yet! The girl’s knee high socks are SO cute, but the real gem is how good I felt in this dress with some tall brown boots. Take a walk on the wild side with this look, you won’t regret it.
Girl’s Dress | Dad’s Shirt and Pants | Mom’s Dress | Boy’s Sweater
Comfort meets Fall. A class look for the whole family, and super comfy clothes for everyone throughout the session. You’ll be looking good AND feeling comfortable!
Girl’s Outfit | Boy’s Shirt | Mom’s Dress | Dad’s Shirt and Pants
We’re going with a pop of bold in this with both colors and stripes! It also screams Fall in all the right ways.
Boys Shirt and Pants | Dad’s Shirt | Mom’s Dress | Girl’s Dress
I’m loving the pop of green and mauve for this set, and then add in the details of lace on mom’s dress and I’m over here gushing in how good ya’ll will look in September and October photos!
Maybe you’re looking for more of a NEUTRAL tones as opposed to Fall colors. I’ve got you covered with the below examples!
Boy’s Shirt | Boy’s Pants | Mom’s Dress | Dad’s Shirt | Dad’s Pants | Girl’s Dress
This gives early Fall vibes before it gets late Fall cold vibes, lol. Comfortable yet leveled up the perfect amount for family portraits.
Boy’s Shirt | Mom’s Dress | Dad’s Shirt | Girl’s Dress
This is the sort of look that could honestly be good for any time of year, which is what I love about it. Not everyone wants to were autumn colors, and I’m here to tell you that’s ok. The neutrals and earth tones are a solid choice!
No Matter What You Do, You Need To Layer, Layer, Layer
Fall is practically made for layering, and the good news is layers photograph beautifully.
A simple outfit can instantly look more styled when you add a cardigan, jacket, vest, or sweater.
For example:
Girl: Floral dress + cardigan + boots
Boy: Button down + sweater + khakis
Dad: T-shirt + flannel overshirt + jeans
Mom: Dress + cardigan + boots
Layers also give you options during your session. If everyone starts getting warm, you can remove a layer and create a completely different look without changing outfits. Most importantly, those layers will keep your kiddos warm on those chilly Fall evenings (which also means more cooperation on their part!).
